We live in a world filled with information and knowledge, yet there is a lack of true wisdom. We accumulate an enormous amount of facts through the constant flow of information bombarding us, yet this does not make us wiser because genuine wisdom transcends mere knowledge.
Wisdom can be defined as the ability to apply knowledge at the right time and in the right way. With all the challenges and situations we need to navigate through today, this ability is in high demand.
Understanding the Essence of Wisdom
Wisdom is an ability that helps us comprehend the world around us and use that knowledge to navigate life's challenges in a way that benefits not only ourselves but also those around us. However, it's more than just intellectual knowledge; it’s like a compass that guides us through everyday circumstances. But how do we attain it?
The Bible tells us that wisdom is a gift from God. It's not something we can achieve merely on the basis of studying. Studying and acquiring knowledge are important, and definitely key elements of wisdom, but wisdom itself is something that gets cultivated in the heart of people who have the right attitude towards God.
The Bible teaches that fearing God is the right attitude for those who seek wisdom. Psalm 111:10 states:
"Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true wisdom. All who obey his commandments will grow in wisdom." — Psalm 111:10
This idea is echoed in Proverbs 1:7, which declares:
"Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." — Proverbs 1:7
You might ask, "How do I start, and what do I do?" Psalm 111:10 provides the answer — it suggests that you will grow in wisdom by obeying God's word. While this may sound simple, obeying God's word in today's world can be quite a challenge. However, the reward is that godly wisdom will begin to grow in our hearts, empowering us to navigate through the many challenges of modern life.
Cultivating wisdom
Knowledge is something that is attained, but wisdom is something that is grown, and how it grows depends on how you nurture the soil of your heart and the climate you provide. As we have already seen, the fear of the Lord is the right soil and climate for godly wisdom to flourish.
When seeds of knowledge are planted in the soil of our hearts, and our hearts are good soil, then wisdom is cultivated and grows. This process transforms knowledge into more than just information — wisdom has the ability to manifest that knowledge in the right way at the right time through the way we live our lives.
Wisdom is the ability to make sense of the knowledge we attain and apply it to real-world situations. Wisdom has many benefits in our personal and spiritual lives. It can help us make better decisions, avoid pitfalls, and overcome challenges. Moreover, it will deepen our relationship with God and help us live a life that is pleasing to Him.
